The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

the_boy_in_the_striped_pyjamasLast Tuesday we  watched the film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Then I asked you to write comparing the book and the film and these are your opinions:

After having seen the film I have to say that I like the book  better, because in the book, the writer gives like an explanation for all Bruno’s acts and this cannot be shown in the film.
Besides, I think that there are some scenes that are missing in the film, like the fact that Bruno has to have all his hair cut because of lice, which makes his mixing up with the Jews more credible.
Moreover, the reading of the book makes you think that Bruno is fatter than Shmuel, but on the contrary, the film shows a very thin boy.
Finally, in favour of the film, I have to admit that the feelings of Bruno’s mother are showed better than they  are in the book.

Verónica

Well, there are some details in the film which aren’t reflected in the book.
For instance, when Pavel  cures Bruno’s wound his mother doesn’t say “thank you” to him, she only tells Pavel that both will tell her husband she had  cured Bruno.
Another point is that Bruno doesn’t make a hole to pass to the other side but Shmuel lifts the wire fence.
Another detail is Lieutenant Kotler’s farewell that is not mentioned in the book at all.
One of the things that  affected Bruno the most was The Fury’s visit  which doesn’t appear at all. And I realised that the name of the new house is not mentioned either. Maybe too painful?
And, of course, the end of the film is more spectacular than in the book, because in the  book Bruno’s mother and sister don’t go to search for him and his father only sees Bruno’s clothes in front of the fence and imagines what has happened.
Well, I think that is all. Sure there are some more details but I don’t remember then right now. ;-P.
I liked the film so sad, so moving, but overall very nice. :-D

Alonso can be ambitious

Fernando Alonso begins his ninth period in the 60th Formula 1 World Championship.

Alonso has participated in designing  his new car in an active way and he has said that the new R29 is consistent and easy to drive, so he is determined to win this World Championship.

The first stage of it is going to take place in “The Great Prize of Australia” in a few days and this will be the stage in which cars are going to suffer the most radical changes in the history of this competition. Besides, teams have their  estimates cut down in a 50%.

This  season, drivers will use plain  tires again and engines have been cut down their rpm from 19.000 to 18.000, because this  season they have to last  twice as many  kilometers than they did the last period.

As for the  aerodynamics, all the appendages that were  surrounding the vehicle have been eliminated.

The last revolutionary change has been the introduction of KERS, a system that turns the energy produced  when using the brakes into electricity and  accumulates it in batteries that provide the car with an extra of 80 horses during 6.6 seconds.

At least, the intention of giving the World Championship to the driver that won the higher number of races has been  contested by the FOTA (Formula 1 Teams  Association), for having been executed in a period of time  inferior to 20 days before the beginning of the competition.

All this changes can make the task of winning his third World Championship easier to Alonso. It Is for that, that Alonso is very optimistic this  season and the staff in Renault  are totally convinced that they have a great single-seater.

We’ll hope that the blue tide hits the headlines again!

In case you don’t know what to do in the time you should be spending in class …

I’m pretty sure that is not the case and you can think of at least a hundred activities that are more fun, but the exams are getting closer so I thought you could use the time we should be spending in class, practising for the exam. Even though you’ll be the first students to take Certificación nivel Avanzado, some communities are publishing sets of sample tests that you can try for practice. Bear in mind that the format of the tests vary from one community to another, so the exams in Asturias might be quite different from these ones, but practice makes perfect, so it will be good for you anyway.

These are from Madrid, they are not Certificación but Certificado de Aptitud, so it’s suppossed to be harder:

And these are from the Basque Country:

Sketches in English

the school drama club

Today at 16.00 instead of having a class we’ll attend a performance by the school’s Drama Club. They have worked really hard all year long to prepare these sketches and we cannot let them down. So I hope to see you all in Sala de Usos Múltiples at 16.00!

At 19.30 we’ll be having a normal lesson that you are all (from both groups) invited to attend.

see you in a while!

Sorry, no lessons today!

I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it to the school today: I have an excruciating toothache, a wisdom tooth is killing me and until the antibiotics kick in I am on painkillers but they don’t seem to be enough! :-(

Here’s what you can do to make up for the lesson:

  • You can do this listening activity from Javier’s English Corner
  • You can watch this funny video where British actor Hugh Laurie and American  talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres test each other on American and British slang:

I wonder if we’d have had time to do all these things in class! Hope to see you on Monday!

14th April

Back from holidays! This is what we did today:

  • Shipwrecked [Textbook pages 70-71]
  • Wordspot: just [Textbook page 75]

This and that

auditorio

Alfredo Krauss Auditorium by Atatiwa

Well, here I am back from the conference, and as I promised I would do, although quite late, I’m posting something for you to do and make up for the lesson we missed on the Thursday before holidays.

The conference was great, I met teachers from other schools full of ideas and enthusiasm and I met again with colleagues I had met in previous conferences. Las Palmas is a wonderful city, very big and beautiful and the people are really nice and hospitable … it was great and very exciting although quite tiring … In the photo you can see the Alfredo Krauss Auditorium where some of the events in the Conference took place, awesome, isn’t it!

I’ve found a handful of links via English in Guia, that can be very useful for you in order to practise for the exam. They link to the sample tests that the EOIs from Catalunya have published online. There are five parts, three of which you can find really useful:

The other two parts you may want to have a go but are not so relevant for you. Use of English because we no longer have this test in Asturias and the Speaking one because it has a completely different format from the one we have here.

Laura from English in Guia has also found this wonderful link for you to paractice for the Speaking test: Splendid Speaking It’s a site where you can register free and get a 15 minute interview through Skipe.
